LET'S WASH AWAY ALL THE HURT!

CONGRATULATIONS YAHTO!!!!!!

This is the ideal follow-up single for The Voice SA artist’s debut release; UGLY - Washed Away is an introspective power ballad with James Bond inspirations, talking of resilience, moving on and leaving the hurt behind.

Written especially for Yahto by Ruth Rozanne Kahts back in 2016,WASHED AWAY  is a James Bond inspired introspective ballad that emphasizes moving on from your past and leaving the hurt behind. It deals with themes of loss and love in the present, as well as the past.

"Back in 2016 when this song was written, I had just written my first single and was heavily leaning on my friends and family to help me get out of that funk. They were the rain that washed away all the pain I had gone through in the year, and I was feeling like a new and refreshed person. They took this pain and hurt I had in me and just drained it out of me, only leaving the good behind."

Firstly congratulations on bagging the role of ‘Namhla’ on Paul Slabolepszy’s SUDDENLY THE STORM, Many people know you from the major roles you have had on the small screen and films, how did you get into the theatre world and how has it been for you?

 - I studied drama at Rhodes University and so performing on stage is where I began, as a professional actor theatre has always been the medium I enjoyed the most and STS is my latest stage production and over the past three years that we’ve performed it, it has become one of my favourites.

Please tell our readers about your role on ‘suddenly the storm’?

- Namhla is an extremely complex and intriguing character,in some ways she’s the most unlike me and I think that’s part of the reason I’ve enjoyed playing her so much, I hope this will be an opportunity for audiences to see me working in a medium I consider my first love. This character is a truth seeker and we follow her on that journey throughout the play.

How is it working with an industry giants like Bobby Heaney and Paul Slabolepszy?

- Working on STS gave me the incredible opportunity to work with the legendary South African playwright, Paul Slabolepszy, it also gave me another opportunity to work with one of my favourite directors, the multi award winning Bobby Heaney, it has been a truly humbling experience for me as an actor, to work with such giants and be able to learn from them.

Suddenly the Storm is playing at Pieter Toerien Theatre in Montecasino, what do you think audiences will be taking away from this play?

-Audiences can expect a play that will take them on a rollercoaster ride, with twists and turns that will having laughing out loud one minute and holding your breath the next.

What advice would you give to aspiring actors? Especially to those who are interested in doing theatre work?

-My advice would be to join a theatre group as early as you can, drama clubs, theatre groups I started in childrens theatre and if that option is available , I strongly advise young actors to join. Theatre for me is the best starting place to learn the tools you need as an actor.

What is next for you?

-I’m excited that we will be travelling to Cape Town again with Suddenly The Storm, so for the next few months I’ll be happily doing what I love most, theatre.

MISS WORLD SOUTH AFRICA 2019 SASHA-LEE LAUREL OLIVIER IS HEADED FOR MISS WORLD PAGEANT FINALE 2019

Sasha-Lee Laurel Olivier, voted one of the most beautiful women in the country at the Miss South Africa competition, is going to represent South Africa at the Miss World pageant. On December 14, she will join contestants from all around the world in London to compete in one of the best-known beauty pageants around the globe. Sasha-Lee, who was sexually abused as a child, has chosen to support, inspire and help girls, boys, women and men who have had a similar experience as part of her Miss World ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ campaign. Using #ItsNotYourFault as her slogan, she is determined to use the very public platform that Miss World provides to bring solace to women (and men) who are survivors of sexual assault. “A very deep sense of shame accompanies rape and long term sexual abuse. Those who have suffered at the hands of the predators and perpetrators feel responsible for their own abuse, and are profoundly ashamed of what is happening, or has happened, to them. We need to desperately change the status quo regarding this - the shame does not belong to the victim at all.” “I want to use my slogan #ItsNotYourFault to show both women and men that they are in no way to blame for what has been done to them.” As part of her campaign, Sasha-Lee will reach out to people reporting a sexual attack at police stations because, she says, “These people are at their most vulnerable at this time.” She cites the fact that earlier this year, 80% of police stations in South Africa have had no medical rape kits at their disposal. “This means the woman or girl (or boy or man) has to sit with the feel, smell and semen of the attacker still on and in them, unable to wash or change until evidence is taken from them. They could wait traumatized for hours.” Sasha-Lee acknowledges the reality of limited access to medical rape kits, but is determined to assist women and men on an emotional level as that was one of the things she wished for when reporting her case. That is the reason she distributes the Rape Comfort Packs that accompany her #ItsNotYourFault campaign. “I hope these Rape Comfort Packs –provide many basic hygiene products, a teddy bear, sugar, and a personalized card assuring them the attack is not their fault – offering a moment of dignity to the wounded soul in what possibly could be the worst moment of their lives.’ “I want those assaulted to know they are not alone; that they are seen and heard and that their dignity has not been impaired because they have been sexually assaulted.” Her efforts are being supported by The Angel Network and active citizen Penny Stein who are helping her reach out to sexual abuse survivors across South Africa, with the distribution of thousands of Rape comfort packs. Sasha-Lee said: “One in three women in South Africa has had some form of unwelcome sexual encounter before the age of 15. It is a shocking statistic and I am one of them.” So, when she walks the ramp at Miss World in London in December, she will take with her a fervent desire to make a difference in the lives of women, children and men who feel alienated, alone and filled with self-loathing after being sexually abused. She follows in the hallowed footsteps of past Miss South Africa winners who have gone on to wear the Miss World Crown. Miss South Africa 2014, Rolene Strauss, won the Miss World title in London, in 2014. Preceding her as Miss World 1974 was Anneline Kriel and before her, Penny Coelen in 1958.

Said Miss South Africa organisation CEO, Stephanie Weil: “We are delighted to announce that Sasha Lee will represent us at the prestigious Miss World competition. “We intend to support her in every possible way with her Beauty with a Purpose campaign. Gender violence is a scourge everywhere in the world, but never more so than here in South Africa where the statistics are alarmingly high. “We know that she will succeed at shining a much needed spotlight on this issue and highlighting the need to act, to put an end to sexual abuse.” The BackaBuddy link to help raise funds for the rape comfort packs - R120 per pack.

All my freak gamers out there, there's a new baddie on the block. Mattel's PictionaryAir has hit South Africa and I want to give you a lowdown on what to expect, what I liked and what I did not like about it so you can make an informed decision when purchasing it.

First things first, Pictionary Air is probably one of the most hilarious games I have ever played. In my opinion it was perfectly designed to bring the humour that has been missing in the gaming world lately.  new version of the game that takes sketches off the paper pad and onto your phone, tablet or TV screen. Yup, everything is digital now which makes things way easier and advanced.

The best way to play this is if you have about 8 members and then split into two teams to play against each other, the competitiveness it brings is quite healthy to relationships, trust me. Download the free Pictionary App, point the in-app camera at the illustrator and they'll appear, along with their sketch, on the screen of your smart device or even TV screen. I recommend the TV screen if you have a large group of people but the downside? The TV feature is only compatible with certain smartphones

I loved playing this game mainly because it brings the whole family together regardless of age, Toymakers often struggle with finding the right balance to incorporating tech that gets kids excited, while also not pushing away parents who are wary of data collection and want to limit screen time. The Guesses are hilarious and you'll see that some people are really bad drawers!

Pictionary Air will be available at selected retailers at a recommended retail price of R499.99. It Includes a Pictionary Air pen, 112 double-sided clue cards and card box and one AA Alkaline battery.

The objective of this urgent mission is to promptly identify first-hand and through engagement with local officials, community leaders and key relief and recovery organisations the most timely and urgent relief needs. MSC Group also wants to find out how it can support the immediate and longer-term in-kind and funding needs of the local population and businesses as they look to rebuild in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian. Gianluigi Aponte, executive chairman and founder of MSC Group, said: "It is heart-breaking to see the impact and devastation that Hurricane Dorian has brought over the Bahamas and its population. The thoughts and prayers of my entire family are with the people of the Bahamas and their families and loved ones.” “As a family company and one that has lived off the sea for over 300 years, we are fully committed to supporting both immediate and longer-term relief and recovery efforts in the Bahamas. MSC Group, through its MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, has been present in the region for the past 20 years and it has long been the leading cargo import and export operator in the Bahamas. Its local headquarters are based in Freeport, Grand Bahama. The operation will involve a number of MSC hubs in the region, in the U.S., the Caribbean and beyond. BENNY BUSHWHACKER: Human Nature Starrring BEN VOSS

Written by John van de Ruit (SPUD)

 Directed by Janice Honeyman
 The Studio Theatre @ Montecasino
3 – 20 October 2019

Benny Bushwhacker, aka Ben Voss, continues his successful national tour of his brand-new, one-man-show and will soon be heading to Gauteng to delight Joburg and Pretoria audiences. Benny Bushwhacker : Human Nature will be on stage at The Studio Theatre at Montecasino from Thursday, 3rd – Sunday, 20th October for a strictly limited season. Joburg audiences loved Ben’s previous shows, including Green Mamba, Black Mamba, Mamba Republic, Bend it Like Beauty and Beauty and the BEE to name but a few. Now they get to see the chance to see this award winning actor, comedian, writer and producer back on stage in his brand new show! Benny Bushwhacker : Human Nature kick-started a fabulous tour when it won two Standard Bank Ovation Awards at the National Arts Festival Makhanda in Grahamstown - the very first staging of the show.

The Republic of South Africa proudly welcomes home Benny Bushwhacker (aka Ben Voss), the world’s funniest conservationist. The legend returns to share what it takes to survive the African bush … and for the African bush to survive. The genial South African, who recently trended worldwide for banging heads with swashbuckling British survivalist Bear Grylls, is touring South Africa’s theatres and festivals with an hilarious yet sobering look at the collision between man and environment. For somebody who has spent more time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life than a hibernating Arctic wood frog, Benny Bushwhacker brings untainted humanity and delicious humour to his performance that will have you laughing out loud and wondering why, when it comes to the bush, the most uncommon human trait is common sense. Whether it be his opinion on how to spot a know-it-all in Kruger, or the relative chances of his estranged wife, Brenda, replacing the buffalo in the Big 5, Benny delivers time and again with his unique sense of humour and classic bush logic. Benny Bushwhacker’s stories and experiences have been translated from bush to page by his unofficial biographer, John van de Ruit, (of Spud fame) and directed from page to stage by the lioness of theatre, Janice Honeyman.

When asked about the project, Director Janice Honeyman said: “I have worked with Ben before and have always enjoyed it. He’s a good actor, and a thinking actor. His Mamba series impressed me, so I chose to direct his alter ego, Beauty Ramapelepele. Ben then worked with me last year on the Snow White Pantomime as Evil Queen Hildagonda, in which he was fantastic. The opportunity to work with him again as Benny Bushwhacker is great fun. The concerns of the content are very close to my heart and putting it into a less didactic, preachy context feels good for me.” Writer of the piece, John van de Ruit, expressed his involvement thus; “Ben and I have been friends and collaborators for over twenty years. In that time, I have had the best seat in the house to witness his talent and versatility as a comedic actor. He has the unique ability to capture reality and extremity, often simultaneously, with hilarious consequences. It does help that he was born with a rubber face, a razor-sharp mind and the body of Frankenstein. This made him the perfect fit for Benny Bushwhacker, a celebrity conservationist with a big heart and little education to speak of." van de Ruit continues; "Historically, Ben Voss and I have collaborated on both scripting and performance, but this time we have made a deliberate decision to separate ourselves into writer and actor. This means I won’t steal Benny’s favourite lines on stage, and he won’t tamper with my favourite lines in the script. I think that’s called collaborative uncoupling. It’s been a terrific time developing the idea of Benny Bushwhacker with Ben Voss, although of late it’s been rather difficult to tell the pair apart.” While touring South Africa, Benny Bushwhacker is raising awareness and Moola for the Lebombo Leopard - Human Conflict Survey. And while leopards are not known to change their spots, through this initiative, Benny will try to help humans to do so. Ben Voss states; “I am closely involved with the Lebombo Leopard Human Conflict Survey in Mkuze, Northern Zululand. A big part of this project is to raise money to set cameras to monitor leopard movement in the area after two children were taken by these cats on the reserve boundary. My interest is not so much conserving pristine bush, as conserving the line between humans and nature. These boundaries are critical. As a roving species, Leopard are under constant threat from humans, and communities are under threat from Leopard. So this conflict seemed like a “natural” fit for my show.

I care about nature, I care about humans and if the leopard is to survive we are going to have to create more green spaces, and keep communities healthy and happy. Voss continues; “The theme of the show is even based around saving the leopard and there are donation boxes for the project at every show. Every single cent in those boxes goes towards the initiative. At the moment we are raising on average R1000 a show and I have nearly 100 shows this year. So R100 000 is my target!” Book your seats soon for this wonderful look at life on the wild side, because, like the rhinos of Africa, you never know if you will get the chance to see it again.

Benny Bushwhacker : Human Nature is on stage at The Studio Theatre @ Montecasino from Thursday 3rd – Sunday 20th October. Performances are Wednesdays – Fridays at 20h00, Saturdays at 16h00 & 20h00 and Sundays at 15h00. Ticket prices are R130 – R180 and bookings are through Computicket. Review of Virtuoso Guitar Duo CH2’s new album release - their 12th - of STARSTRUCK.

CH2, the multi-international award-winning duo from South Africa just released their 12th album and I was fortunate enough to have a listen. classical – guitars seems to be the sound they are comfortable with, you can tell by the different transitions between tracks and their guitar playing skills are evident.
A number of exciting international, African and local collaborations are featured on the album, which makes sense if you want to have an album with different influences and one that will take you to  places. Their choice of collaborations is amazing, I loved what Nomad and Llloyd Cele brought to the album, these two artists brought immense soul and texture to the project.
The album is graced with the musician mastery of world-class artists like Denny Lalouette on bass (Josh Groban, Leo Sayer, Chris de Burgh, Shirley Bassey, Andy Narell (American steel drum player), Demis Roussos, Patrizio Buanne, Michael Gibbs (British arranger), Joe Henderson (American jazz saxophonist), Trevor Rabin, (Dana Winner) and Brendan Ross on sax (who played for the legend Johnny Clegg)

One of the elements I liked is how gracefully they handled cover songs on the album. There are some songs that you don’t truly appreciate until another artist takes it on and makes it their own. Often times the newer version draws out the original’s complexities in a way you never would have noticed before. Or maybe the first version is equally compelling, but the cover artist reimagined it with such grandeur that many don’t even realize that it’s a new take on an old song. I enjoyed their cover of Shakira’s 2010 hit, ‘Waka Waka’, perfectly executed.

 My Top 3 Tracks:
1. Keep Moving ft Lloyd Cele
 2. Dream ft Butera
3. Volare

 Least favourites:
1. Fabel (live)
2. I’ll tell me ma
3. Thunderstruck

STARSTRUCK is available for purchase via various digital platforms. Hard copies of the album can be bought at their many public gigs, ordered online at http://ch2.bigcartel.com otherwise by clicking the “Shop” button on CH2’s website.

Miss South Africa returns to Tsolo in the Eastern Cape

Zozibini Tunzi received a tumultuous welcome when she returned to her rural village in the Eastern Cape.

Crowds lined the streets as the home coming queen’s cavalcade slowly wound its way from the Mthatha Airport, through to Tsolo, the tiny hamlet that she grew up in.

The crowds chanted, sang, ululated and danced as they welcomed the returning daughter of the soil who was coming home for the first time since she was crowned Miss South Africa on Women’s Day on August 9.

Tunzi was overwhelmed by the reception: “I cannot believe how many people came out to greet me. I feel so welcomed by my community. These people influenced my life and the choices have I made. I owe a big debt of gratitude to them. All I can say is thank you.”

In his welcome address, the Executive Mayor of the Sidwadweni District Municipality, Thokozile Sokanyile, described how proud the people of the area were of Zozibini.

The new Miss South Africa, in her acceptance speech, promised to campaign for better educational opportunities for the people of the Eastern Cape. Her words were gratefully heard by members of the community where she herself received her early education.

While she is on her home coming tour, Tunzi’s visit will be celebrated with the observance of traditional rituals performed by the elders and the village chief.

Said Miss South Africa Organisation director Paul Leisegang: “It was amazing watching people embrace Zozibini as one of their own and welcome her home as the queen she is. We are all overwhelmed by how warm her reception has been.”

Young girls who lined the streets, who no doubt dream of the possibility of following in Tunzi’s footsteps, shouted out her name and took selfies with her. Ever gracious, Tunzi made a special effort to give attention to the young women saying: “This was me just a few years ago.”

Miss South Africa is presented by Weil Entertainment in association with Sun International and the LFP Group.

Mirriam is the Mother of the Nation! #MissSA2019 news

Solani Mirriam Mazibuko (71) was named Mother of the Nation at the Miss South Africa 2019 pageant which took place at the Sun Arena in Pretoria on Women’s Day. The director of the Orlando Children’s Home was honoured during the live screening of the pageant by host Bonang Matheba and received R50 000 from Miss South Africa sponsors, the LFP Group. She was nominated by Miss South Africa finalist Noluthando Bennett. Mama Mirriam, as she is affectionately known, has inspired hundreds of young people who have passed through her care at the Orlando Children’s Home. Said Bennett: “She truly is a mother of many, giving of herself and her time to help children who are in her care, who have been abandoned, who would otherwise be unloved and unwanted. She is my heroine.” Mama Mirriam says she does what she does because she is driven to make sure that the children in her charge have the right start in life.

She is unsentimental in her approach, which is simple: Children need as close a proximate to a home where they are sheltered, protected and loved as is humanly possible. That is her end goal: to provide such an environment for these lost little ones until she can place them in a family situation in caring homes. Said Mama Mirriam: “We have 60 children in need, aged up to 18-years-old, with us at the moment. This month, August – Women’s Month in South Africa – there are 84 children in the Orlando Home’s crèche. Our youngest is a one-month-old abandoned baby, whose parents could possibly have been HIV positive. Not that that makes any difference to us!” She says that once the children are in her fold, there are no labels and their medical status remains confidential: “We just want our children to be adopted; to go to good homes. Everything else is immaterial.” Mirriam Mazibuko joined Orlando Children’s Home in 1992, after a long stint at Johannesburg Child Welfare. The home, established in 1940 by the Johannesburg Child Welfare Society (they withdrew their support in 1977 due to a lack of funds), caters for children who have been abandoned by their parents. Mama Mirriam says in her time at the home, she has had to wear a host of different hats. “When you are the director of a small children’s home with few resources, you have to be a fund raiser, a safety officer, a social worker and a public relations consultant. I am on call 24 hours of the day, and am often called out at night if there is a problem with one of our children.” It was fitting that this award was presented to Mama Mirriam on Women’s Day.

Sixty-three years ago, on August 9, 1956, when she was just eight years old, more than 20 000 South African women of all races marched on The Union Buildings to protest against African women being forced to carry pass papers. Led by Mothers of the Nation, and heroines Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa and Sophia Williams, the women sang a protest song that has remained a signifier of the power of women: “You Strike a Woman, you Strike a Rock.” This baton has been passed on to women like Mama Mirriam, whose courage, dedication, resilience and dogged perseverance we honour and applaud.

A FEAST OF TALES FROM THIS YEAR’S MAGICAL STORY BOOK

“Story telling has a magic about it that entrances and enthrals. It has the ability to grab the attention of any audience, young and old.  This show is about books and reading.”

One of the most beloved children’s theatres, Peoples Theatre, proudly presents another series of timeless tales, Rumpelstiltskin, The Emperors New Clothes and so many more, in this year’s magical production of Story Book Theatre on stage from Monday, 2nd – Sunday 29th September.
Children will fall in love with their favourite bookshelf classics all over again when they experience the enchanted world of books, which dynamic duo Jill Girard and Keith Smith creatively bring to stage.
“Our aim has always been to share the wonder of books and reading with children. To bring life back to all the most dearly loved stories and give children something memorable to carry with them after the curtain falls,” says Girard.
The Story Book Theatre series has always been extremely popular and in past years has seen sold out performances.
In 2019 it’ll be no different. With great fairy tales the likes of Honest Woodcutter, Little Red Riding Hood, Brave Roaster, Tinder Box, The Princess and the Pea and Hansel and Gretel. all taking centre stage, the only thing left is a superb cast to perform them - together with the audience who become an integral and interactive part of the show.
This is exactly what the young audiences will get with the skills of actors like Nonhlanhla Mkhonto, Joelle Rochecouste , Luciano Zuppa, Katlego Nche and introducing  Raymond Skinner. All  professional performers are highly proficient in musical theatre and have appeared in numerous Peoples Theatre shows previously.
The cast will bring this year’s Story Book Theatre classics alive through the use of engaging narration, music, movement, puppetry and, of course, exciting audience interaction.
“By involving the young audience we can trigger their imaginations and give back to them an unforgettable and magical theatre experience,” Smith says.
And what unforgettable children’s musical theatre production would be complete without contemporary child-friendly music, which is what musical director Dale Scheepers has provided in his kaleidoscope of toe-tapping renditions of popular hit songs.
Providing the colour and breathing vibrant life into the stories is the stunning set design by Grant Knottenbelt and glorious fun costumes by Merry Whillier.

Story Book Theatre is aimed for young audiences, generally between 3 – 10 years, and is one event Johannesburg’s youngsters should not be missing this spring.
“Need a little magic? all you have to do is open a book”
Story Book Theatre runs at Peoples Theatre at the Joburg Theatre Complex from Sunday 8th September – Sunday 29th September (Previews take place from 2nd September).
Performance times are Mondays to Friday at 9am and 11amSaturdays at 10:30am and 2.30pm as well as all Sundays and Public Holidays.

Quick reasons why we fell in love with watching Sports at The Square

We recently headed out to Silverstar for the exhilarating Soweto Derby match between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs where Silverstar hosted us for the big screen viewing. Being the first time at Silverstar watching Sports on their big screen, these are 5 reasons that will guarantee you to have a visit at their next sporting event:

1. The Interactive Fountain
For those with children or simply those young at heart, it is an attraction to be explored and revisited time and time again. The beauty of water is cleary demonstrated, definitely adding fun element before, during or even after the game. The water dances through the air, lands on the ground and the sound it makes is heavenly!

2. View of the magaliseberg mountains
These Mountains give a pure, fresh scenery giving you that escape from the busy city while relaxed and enjoying the game on screen. The peak is clearly visible which makes the atmosphere in and around the mountain so so serene.

 3. The big screen
Their big screen just pulls you in, wherever you are around the square the picture is just impeccable! The placing of the screen makes the outdoor area even feel better and it truly brings people together. The best part of this screen is being able to see all those goals crystal clear in each epic clash.

4. Food and Drinks
Value for money food, great, refreshing drinks. There are food trucks around the square when events take place and they make sure they cater for everyone's dietary requirements. If food trucks are not your thing then you can treat yourself to a meal at one of the many restaurants circling the square. You are at view of the screen so you can enjoy both the restaurant and the sporting event!

5. The People
Everyone in the square is so friendly, from the staff to the people. The vibe will instantly make you feel like you are at home on the couch having fun with friends. Watching soccer here was extra special because you had two groups that support different teams and although we were competing, there were cheers and laughter from everyone. THE VIBE IS REAL!

Four people with 50 years service and memories at Montecasino

La dolce vita, the sweet life – that’s the essence of Montecasino (https://www.tsogosun.com/montecasino) with all the fabulous Italian flair, freshness, friendliness, fun, and family life that the phrase conjures up. And since it opened in 2000, Montecasino has focused its collective and considerable energy on delivering all that and more to the millions of visitors who come through the doors anticipating great experiences. Mike Page, now GM of Montecasino, was with the property while it was still under construction, in the finance department. He recalls looking out over “the massive canyon” that would transform into the constantly changing and evolving world-class entertainment destination it is today. He, together with three other staff members who have together been with Montecasino for a total of just over 50 years, reflect on what makes Montecasino one of Gauteng’s favourite places to be. Page had joined Tsogo Sun as Compliance Manager, working at the temporary casino in the Northgate Sundome while Montecasino was being built and has come full circle, having moved on to become Director of Operations & Complex GM of two other Tsogo Sun properties – Hemingways (https://www.tsogosun.com/hemingways-casino) and Gold Reef City(https://www.tsogosun.com/gold-reef-city-casino), before returning to Montecasino in 2017; Tshidi Moroane, Marketing Host Duty Manager, has been at Montecasino since it opened; Julia Pollecutt joined soon after it opened as part of the banqueting team at La Toscana (https://www.tsogosun.com/montecasino/meetings-conferences/la-toscana) and has grown with Montecasino to become Tenant Manager, overseeing the property’s tenants; and Lauren Small, Events Manager, who has been with Montecasino for close on 12 years and has worked in most of the marketing departments, including mind & mood, communications and events.

Q: What are your favourite early memories of Montecasino?
MP: It was so fresh and new, bursting at the seams and unique in its Italianness. The attention to detail was impeccable and it was exciting watching it all come alive. TM: I was part of the staff who educated the public about Montecasino’s Italian theme. We had a mock-up building and we showed guests the experience and texture of a Tuscany Village. It was all very new for everyone. Later, in 2010, during the 2010 Soccer World Cup, Nelson Mandela came to SunSquare as a surprise to the public – I think that was one of the most memorable experiences of my life and it was here at Montecasino.

What do you believe makes Montecasino Gauteng’s premier entertainment destination?
MP: Fundamentally, it’s the might of Montecasino. It’s rare to get this amount of investment into one property. The scale is huge and covers all facts, with three hotels, theatres, 40 restaurants, 15 cinemas, and more. It’s the only place where you get this level of choice. It also has an excellent track record in constant evolution and reinvention since the initial build – it has stayed relevant to the target market, and there is always something new in the pipeline.
JP: Montecasino is a unique entertainment destination with unusual offerings that create talking points among visitors from all over South Africa as well as around the world. The property’s Italianesque theme combined with African spirit, as well as the exceptionally wide range of offerings for visitors of all ages keeps us entertaining and fresh, and keeps them coming back again and again. LS: The continual buzz. Montecasino never sleeps. No matter the time of day or day of the week, there’s always something happening from world-class theatre productions and events to gaming, dining, movies and even retail therapy. It’s not just my opinion, but the public’s too when you consider all the amazing Best of Joburg awards that we have won year after year. TM: Montecasino caters for everyone, from kids to adults; the safety and security of guests is a top priority; and we strive to create a magical experience for every guest.

What are your favourite things about Montecasino?
MP: Jasmine in early summer, an abundance of flowers, gardens with lemon trees at the Palazzo, the massive doors at the west entrance, the energy of the people – specifically the restaurant owners, engaging with their guests on a Friday night. I could go on and on.
JP: The Tuscan streets, the family vibe, the Montecasino Bird Gardens with its tranquil environment and beautiful walkways, and restaurant hopping. LS: Taking a walk through the Bird Gardens; it’s like food for my soul.

What difference has Montecasino made to the local community?
MP: Montecasino is very committed to our community, and we’re involved in a number of initiatives that includes investment in the Diepsloot Safe-Hub, which provides local children with a safe environment for facilitated sports, arts, life skills lessons, and personal development; the Witkoppen School where we have planted food trees and donated a fence; a local park, and many others.
TM: Montecasino is involved in a lot of CSI activities that support the local community such as career guidance and mentoring for high school learners, sponsorships, Mandela Day activities, CANSA Shavathons, book collections, and more. What are your major learnings in your career at Montecasino? LS: I started at Montecasino in May 2008 as an Event Producer and I knew then that Montecasino was a place that I wanted to become a bigger part of. Working in the eventing industry for a business that operates 24/7 is not for the faint-hearted – it’s a way of life. To succeed, you need to learn to integrate your work life and your personal life, and at the end of the day, hard work and dedication pay off. I am still here, loving my job and I wouldn’t change a thing!

Lauren Small (Events Manager), Mike Page (Director of Operations and GM of Montecasino), Julia Pollecutt (Complex Tenant Manager) and Tshidi Moroane (Marketing Host Duty Manager Kyle Deutsch brings back the Love!

Just when you thought you can't get enough, African Pop sensation, Kyle Deutsch, has done it yet again to keep us going all night. Moving on from his previous chart-topping single "Summer Love" to bring you another hit single, “Bring Back the Love”.

Set to keep us warm this winter, Deutsch has teamed up with Durban based teenage prodigy & production genius Skattaisdead to create what we feel is possibly his best release yet. The record borrows from a multitude of genres - house, future bass, trap - creating a hauntingly-infectious track that will have you singing & grooving to one of its many catchy hooks & melodies. "We started the track with a guitar melody that Kyle played, we then reversed it and fell in love." said Skatta. "We then added what turned out to be the bass and driving lead synth all in one little package. We've been really excited & eager to release this one for some time."

As always, Deutsch tends to disrupt the conventional norms of the music video space ensuring quality visual production, and emotive storytelling. Using an all-star female production crew directed by esteemed photographer and art director Elsa Bleda and shot by multi award winning cinematographer, Gaopie Kabe, Deutsch has really impressed with this one. "I've worked with Elsa before on the Can't Get Enough videos and we've become close friends. I call her the Light Goddess. Her eye for colour and contrast is second to none.", says Deutsch The video stars the exquisitely talented International Ballet sensation Ruan Galdino. "Ruan is a wonderful human & possibly one of the best ballet dancers in the world." said Deutsch. "We couldn't have chosen a better person to play the role. I am so excited about the wave that is to come from this track. It’s something really unique and special to me. The track calls for guilt free honesty, for love and art to return & to win above all."

Montecasino launches world first in entertainment

South Africa has the distinction of achieving a world first in gaming – a Cash & Cars Progressive Roulette(https://www.tsogosun.com/montecasino/gaming/casino-promotions/cash-and-cars), which has launched at Montecasino (https://www.tsogosun.com/montecasino) . The game offers a progressive bet of only R20, and the opportunity to win both a spunky Mini Cooper Hatchback worth over R320,000 and a shared cash pool of R80 000 simultaneously – once every few weeks.
Caroline Naidu, Tables Manager of Montecasino, explains, “Montecasino has had exceptional success with Cash & Cars on Slots, which has been a popular game choice because of the opportunity to play towards a progressive jackpot and the chance to win both a car and cash at the same time. It took some out-of-the-box thinking to extend this experience to our Tables (https://www.tsogosun.com/montecasino/gaming/tables) offering but it was a challenge that TCSJohnHuxley rose to. Montecasino has once again lived up to its promise that ‘We’ve Got It’ with this world first – nowhere else in the world do you stand the chance to win a car on a progressive roulette table.”
Naidu adds that it is expected that the Cash & Cars Progressive Roulette will have the same hit frequency as Cash & Cars Slots, with one car likely to be won every three weeks. Since launching in April, the Jackpot has already been won twice, the first on 25 April and the second on 11 May. “This game takes Roulette to the next level, and the thrill of gaming to new heights."

Cash & Cars Progressive Roulette is available on four easily identified Roulette tables at Montecasino, two on the main floor and two in the smoking casino. The game is based on a R20 progressive bet with a variety of ways to win multiple jackpots. Players simply place their bets on the same colour progressive pad as the chips they are playing, before the spin. To win the cash and car, the wheel number and the two bonus wheels numbers must match the personal lucky number randomly allocated to their colour – all numbers must be the same. To add to the excitement, when the car is won, players who placed a progressive bet on that spin will win a share of a cash amount displayed on the screen.

The opportunities to win don’t end there, with three other progressive jackpots up for grabs. The 777s Community Progressive Jackpot prize is won when the table wheel and two bonus wheels are all 7s – the value is divided among the players who placed progressive bets. The Roulette Mystery and the Floor Wide Mystery prizes are progressive jackpots and are linked to all Cash & Cars Progressive Roulette tables. The bottom line is that for a relatively small bet on the progressive betting pad, any player can win cash or the car, or both. And then there’s the Bonus Bet, which holds the record for the highest odds on a side bet at any Tsogo Sun Casino (https://www.tsogosun.com/gaming/casinos), which pays a whopping 1,200 to 1.
Mike Page, Operations Director and Complex GM of Montecasino, “Offering a world first on Roulette with so many chances to win cash or a five-door Mini Cooper hatch, or both, is about much more than being the first. It’s part of making sure we continue to give our visitors and guests quality, memorable experiences in our ‘world at play’ where there’s always something new and exciting happening.”
Says Christiaan Els, Interim Managing Director, TCSJOHNHUXLEY South Africa, “Following two years of collaborative development work, we are delighted to be launching the innovative and exciting Cash & Cars Roulette Progressive in partnership with Tsogo Sun (https://www.tsogosun.com/gaming) and Montecasino. Cash & Cars is the first of its kind and we are honoured to have partnered in the development of this landmark progressive."

The Gentleman's Morning hosted by Sorbet!

Shop L49, Beyers Naude Drive, Cresta, Randburg is where all roads were headed on a beautiful Thursday morning where we were hosted by Sorbet Man for their Gentleman's morning which is basically a morning of great skin and hair care talks, champagne and Gourmet breakfast. I thought I should just give you a quick rundown and share all that I learnt that day.

Summer is here, we all want to look, feel and do good and what better way to do that than educating yourself about your skin in the midst of all the travelling, partying and drinking? Sorbet man has partnered with international brands like Dermalogica, Blue Beards, Redken and KST to make sure they cater for all your needs!

We had a talk from Dermalogica who advised us to use Sunscreen since the sun is the main contributing factor to skin aging. There are different types of sunscreens to choose from like chemical sunscreens, broad spectrum and solar defense boosters. Exfoliate continuously to remove dead skin cells, use masks and always put on day and night creams. Men, as much as Women need to have a skin routine and stick to it.

Another interesting talk was from Hairy Eye Beard and Body Shop which is a manufacturer and distributor of natural beard care products and grooming accessories. The talk was all about the beard and highlighting how back then beard was just beard, now there are different types of beards with a personalised style and trimmed according to what suits you. Their top tip was to never trim at home as mistakes could happen that will compromise your beard growth and style, ask your barber since they are informed on beard care and especially Sorbet Man barbers since they were trained at the Sorbet Man academy about every hair and beard care needs as well as trained to do any hair from any ethnicity. The first six to eight weeks of beard grooming is uncomfortable but Hairy Eye advises us to look after our beards to avoid stinking and dryness. The use of beard grooming products is essential especially products such as Natural Base Soap with antioxidants and Beard wax with sheer butter and coconut oil.

After all the talks we were treated to any treatments of our choice and I obviously had to go with a manicure after I neglected my nails for a while! luckily after the awesome treatment I was given the rejuvenating Sorbet Nail and Hand Cream which ensures my hands and nails still get well taken care of after the treatment.

Sorbet Man Cresta and Dermalogica give 4 tips to great skin this Summer

The environment is constantly changing as society develops and as the seasons change, but you still have to make sure your skin is not only well taken care of, but that it takes care of you. Sorbet Man Cresta and Dermalogica share the secret to achieving healthy glowing skin for life.

As the largest human organ, the skin protects the body from harmful elements like bacteria or pollution. It is like a wall, built of bricks and cement. The bricks are the skin cells and the cement is the blend of oils and water. The function of the oil is to trap water beneath it, keeping the skin cells hydrated, healthy and in good working order.

Looking after your skin means you’ll be less prone to sensitivity, breakouts, uneven or dull complexion or ageing. During summer our skin is exposed in high intense doses of UV, the number one cause of skin damage that leads to ageing. It is not just the lines and wrinkles but uneven skin tone, or hyper pigmentation, dehydration and inflammation that significantly influences the health of your skin. These are the professional top tips for achieving healthy, protected skin and real results.

So we need to adjust our skin care to focus on;

1. Exfoliate for clearer, smoother skin
Exfoliation removes dead, dulling skin debris to prevent congestion and improve hydration from toners and moisturizers. Perform in the mornings prior to toner, moisturizer and SPF application. Don’t forget, after you exfoliate, follow with a hydrating body cream to seal in moisture, and always shield freshly exfoliated skin with an SPF (as recommended by the FDA).
Recommended: Daily Microfoliant®, Body Hydrating Cream.

2. Keep skin hydrated
Up your regimen’s level of hydration with intensive masques, perfect for use one to two times a week. Boosters are a great fit, working best when layered underneath a moisturizer. Toners are a refreshing moisturizer prep, working to even out skin porosity.
Recommended:  Antioxidant HydraMist, Skin Hydrating Booster, Skin Hydrating Masque.

3. Make friends with H20
Higher temperatures and more time outdoors leads to internal dehydration, which can result in headaches and dizzy spells! Drink Eight 8-ounce glasses of plain, filtered water every day help maintain critical moisture balance of the body and skin, and assist in detoxification. If you drink caffeinated beverages, you must triple the amount of water you drink!

4. When in doubt, apply (and reapply!)
It’s not enough to just apply sunscreen, you must apply enough, and apply it frequently.  Studies indicate that most people do not apply nearly as much daylight protection as they should. A teaspoon for the face. For the body, about as much as would fill a shot glass.

Re-apply every two hours. Today’s sophisticated formulas and technology lets you select sun protection that works with your skin condition. That means you can choose oil-free, mattifying formulas, extra emollient formulas for dry skin, or chemical free formulas for sensitized, reactive skin.
Recommended: Oil Free Matte SPF30, Super Sensitive Shield SPF30.

Summer time also provides every excuse to change your lifestyle. This in turn has an effect on your hormones. Your stress levels, diet choices, and the amount of sleep you get, will influence how prone you are to breakouts as all of these directly affect your hormones.
Help your body to regulate your hormone balance;
Reduce your refined sugar intake
Get enough sleep and exercise
Reduce your stress by doing something fun
Choose a skin care programme that supports your skin.

Work with your Skin Therapist to find an at-home skincare regimen that suits your skin and your lifestyle so that you can keep on top of your skin every day. The PowerBrain memory course coming soon!!

Michael Abrahamson is best known as one of South Africa's foremost sports broadcasters
with his experience dating back to 1991. One of his main career highlights include working as SABC's main English radio commentator at the 2010 FIFA World Cup radio station - Radio 2000.

However, this qualified Actuary's passion lies in the art of mentalism. While you may be skeptical, there is more to this artform than meets the eye. Mentalism makes use of the power of the mind with purely scientific methods to achieve the feats that are demonstrated in the shows that Michael performs. Abrahamson's mentalism shows have proven to be a huge success with a vast range of audiences. This show is unique and completely different and has universal appeal.

With his mentalism shows, Abrahamson also demonstrates how he has developed his memory
over the years especially since he has memorised all the flags from 200 independent countries, plus various facts of each country. The PowerBrain memory course was created by Michael as a way to teach methods to improve memory, and the course is designed to improve concentration levels and build up stronger links between the left and the right side of your brain so that you can use more of your brain to achieve better results.

“I enjoyed the sessions very much and feel more empowered to go and write my exams. I would recommend this to anyone. Thank you very much, Michael, you are doing a great job”
– Tshepiso Matlapeng, UNISA student working at Alexander Forbes

Before the year ends, Michael Abrahamson will be hosting a memory course

Strauss & Co is proud to announce it's largest-ever live auction by value, with combined estimates for the 12 November sale in Johannesburg exceeding R80 million. The astonishing range and depth of work on offer - notably by key twentieth-century artists like Maggie Laubser, JH Pierneef, Alexis Preller and Irma Stern - is confirmed by the fact that 26 lots on this sale carry estimates of R1 million, or more.

Based in Cape Town and Johannesburg, Strauss & Co is the global leader for South African art.
It holds five line sales annually, including one sale that is solely devoted to contemporary art.
Strauss & Co has sold nine of the ten most expensive paintings ever auctioned in South Africa.

New York’s Les Ballets Eloelle to perform in “Men In Tutus"

at The Teatro, Montecasino, for FOUR SHOWS ONLY

Technical brilliance, tongue-in-cheek humour and a passion for classical and contemporary ballet….

“Men In Tutus” will soon be seen on stage at The Teatro, Montecasino, to delight audiences for 4 shows only from Friday 12th, – Sunday 14th, April 2019.

“Male ballerina” is usually a term used in error made by a rookie arts writer. However, Les Ballets Eloelle (say it aloud and you’ll get the joke), led by founder, Artistic Director and lead dancer Victor Trevino, features – as one of the few all-male comedy ballet companies in the world – a troupe of such dancers: men dancing roles traditionally reserved for women.

The comedy aspect of “Men In Tutus” – clever, affectionate parody of the ballet canon, both classical and contemporary via the dancers’ hilarious female personae – never undermines either the challenges of performing the complex choreography or the exceptional results, which make the show so thrilling to watch.

As Trevino explains: “Men do not traditionally train in pointe shoes. We tend to be heavier, with our weight distributed differently to female dancers. Women generally begin training in dancing on pointe when they are young; about 11 years old, while men are not encouraged to do so, as there’s very little opportunity to use that skill in classical dance.”

Trevino, who began his comedic career with Les Ballet Trockadero De Monte Carlo, where he performed almost all the female leads in the repertoire as a principal dancer, adds that it is not only the individual proficiency of the dancers that is impressive.

“Learning to work as partners is another challenge,”he notes. “Dancers in any traditional ballet company will appreciate the difficulties here, but when men partner men, there are several adjustments to make. Again, we must take into account our weight and physicality, but we also need to learn how to be supported or lifted as we move.”
