IT'S A WHISKY SHOWDOWN

Whisky enthusiasts, bloggers, journalists all headed out to the Whisky Brother Bar in Morningside, Sandton where we were hosted by Bains Whisky and it's Master Distiller Andy Watts for an exclusive tasting of the proudly South African brand. Andy Watts, who in 1991 became the 6th manager in the home of Bains since its establishment in 1886 presented the tastings to us and who better than the man who has been in the Whisky industry for mindblowing 34 years! we had to milk as much information from him to discover the essence and secrets that make this Iconic brand work.

Bains is a double matured Whisky produced from 100% SA yellow maize, it has a hint of spice softened by sweet undertones of oak, which gives you a smooth finish. Since 2009 it has won numerous international competitions, Andy mentioned that there are no local competitions which in my opinion is very sad, it shows how undermined Grain whisky is in South Africa. For someone who is not a frequent Whisky drinker I learned a lot during the tasting and even proud at how a local brand is doing on a global stage. Inspired by Bains, alot of Grain Whiskys are being produced internationally. 

''Not many people created Grain, but that didn't stop us" says Andy Watts. This shows that the family of Bains knew they had a winner and were willing to do whatever to win.
