Restaurant Mosaic at the Orient wins top accolade at the Eat Out Awards for the second consecutive year

Restaurant Mosaic does it again! wow!

Restaurant Mosaic at the Orient, along with Chef Chantel Dartnall and her team, has triumphed at this year’s 2018 Eat Out Awards which were announced in Cape Town on the 18th of November.

Sommelier Moses Magwaza received the coveted Eat Out Wine Service Award for the second consecutive year. The award-winning Gauteng based restaurant has been celebrated internationally for its cellar which boasts more than 75 000 bottles and nearly 6 000 different labels. Mosaic – which has enhanced South Africa’s international status as a gourmet destination thanks to Dartnall’s meticulous approach to modern fine dining and her signature Botanical Cuisine – took No 7 spot in list of the country’s Top 10 Restaurants and was the only restaurant in Gauteng in The Top 10.

Dartnall – who has twice been named South African Chef of the Year and who was named Best Female Chef in the World at The Best Chef Awards in Poland last year – was delighted with the recognition from the Eat Out judges: “Those who have followed Mosaic since we opened 12 years ago know that we have never stood still when it comes to creating dishes. We have the benchmark where we are now and we always push ourselves to be better and to produce a menu that will please both the eye and the palate.” Dartnall’s menus are celebrated for her innovative use of herbs and flowers in her tell-tale symphony of minute feminine detail.

Dartnall and her team have picked up numerous other awards this year. Restaurant Mosaic received an impressive five World's Best Wine List Awards in the UK for its world class wine list and service, including the Best Wine list for Hotels in the World. In what was a first for a restaurant from South Africa and the African continent, it earned a 2018 Grand Award from the highly-acclaimed US publication Wine Spectator for its incomparable wine list and cellar with Dartnall featuring on the cover.

Natura Naturans - The Earth Laughs in Flowers is the name of Chantel Dartnall’s current spring/summer menu and again features her signature botanical cuisine style, using only the best seasonal produce and taking a cue from nature. Dishes include Under the Veil – a composition of langoustine, white peach and hibiscus; From the Frozen Ocean which has Arctic salmon “cooked” in front of the guests in a magic piece of culinary theatre while Cherry Blossom, comprises duck wings and lightly smoked duck breast with luscious cherry flavours.
