FAIRVIEW ROSE QUARTZ 2024

South Africa’s vineyard landscape is striking, characterised by ancient geological formations, such as Africa’s single biggest granite rock in Paarl. Formed from crystallised magma, granite is composed primarily of two minerals: quartz and feldspar, offering soils ideal for cultivating vines. Today, some vineyards are speckled with remnants of this decomposed quartz, which in the right afternoon light, shimmers pink in the sun’s rays. Fairview’s Rose Quartz emerges from these granite soils, reflecting the very minerals in which it is grown.

Varieties: Cinsault 48% / Grenache Noir 35% / Carignan 16% / Mourvèdre 1%

In the vineyard: All varieties used for Fairview’s premium rosé are carefully selected small parcels of traditional Mediterranean rosé varieties. The Cinsault is from 30-year-old bushvines planted on the upper slopes of the Fairview farm where the shiny rose quartz lies visible between the vines. The Grenache Noir component is an early picking from Fairview’s terraced Stok-by-Paaltjie single vineyard site planted on the east-facing slopes of Paarl Mountain. The Carignan and Mourvèdre are from dryland organically grown Swartland vineyards.

In the cellar: The grapes were handpicked and carefully transferred to the cellar in crates, where they underwent whole-bunch pressing. The juice was allowed to settle overnight. It was then racked and fermented as separate vineyard components. Cold fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks for the Cinsault and Grenache, while the Carignan was barrel fermented in older 225L French oak barrels. This oak component contributes a creamy texture and adds complexity to the final blend. All components spent seven months on the lees before being blended and bottled.

Food recommendation: Delicious on its own, this versatile wine will pair elegantly with a wide array of dishes including fresh oysters, sushi, smoked salmon, prosciutto-wrapped melon, fresh summer salads, paella, Mediterranean and seafood dishes, camembert and brie, and tapas-style platters.
